About the Author

I was born on Thursday, December 25, 1919, in the community of Fairplay, Texas which is located in Panola County near Carthage, Texas. I was the second born of five children to Mordie Holland and Lois Allison Holland. My Father, at the time of my birth, was a sharecropper for his uncle, and worked as a farmer, rancher and carpenter all of his life. Under this setting I learned many things, not written in books, that were unknown to city reared boys; one being the pleasure of accomplishment in doing a difficult job well. At an early age I could tell time accurately by the sun, make my own toys, run miles without a letup and make a mule walk the top of a high furrow.
